Full Circle 2025: The Making of the Gallery Exhibit

Behind the scenes of Full Circle

Full Circle 2025. Installing paintings in the gallery at Arts Access.

Full Circle 2025 is nearly two months away, but the artists and staff are already hard at work preparing for this spectacular event. Recently, we got a few moments with Julia Halsey, the Outreach and Events Manager here at Arts Access, to discuss her process of putting together the gallery exhibit.

What is your process for selecting pieces to feature in the gallery exhibit?
I start by looking at the work our artists have created over the past year. I try to find pieces that really showcase each artist’s voice, and I also think about how the works will come together as a whole. I want the exhibit to feel balanced so that it reflects the diversity of our artists.

How did the theme “The Making of an Artist” guide your selections?
This theme really encouraged me to think about process, not just the final product. I looked for pieces that showed experimentation, growth, and the evolution of each artist’s creative journey. It was less about finding a “perfect” finished piece and more about highlighting the ways artists are always developing and discovering themselves.

How long does it take to curate the gallery exhibit?
The process starts with selecting and reviewing the artwork, then moves into selecting framing, curating the layout, preparing labels, artist statements and biographies, and coordinating installation. Altogether, I begin the process at least six months in advance.

What is the most challenging part of the process?
Narrowing down the artwork is the hardest part. Our artists create such a wide variety of incredible pieces, and every one of them has something to say. The challenge is making sure I honor as many voices as possible while still creating a cohesive exhibit.

What is the most rewarding part of the process?
I love watching the reactions of visitors who might be experiencing our artists’ work for the first time. You can see perspectives change in real time, and that’s such a powerful part of Full Circle. It’s also rewarding to know I’ve played a small role in helping our artists share their voices with the world and giving them a chance to be recognized as the professional artists they are.

What do you hope the attendees will take away from the exhibit?
I hope people leave with a greater appreciation for our artists as artists first and foremost, not defined by their disabilities, but by their talent.

What is something new for the attendees to expect from this year’s gallery exhibit?
Since the theme is “The Making of an Artist,” we’re showing more of the evolution behind the art. We’re building in elements that let people connect more deeply with the artists’ stories and understand the choices behind their work. I’m also very excited that for the first time ever we’re switching up the way we frame paintings. Each frame is hand-selected to complement the individual artwork rather than using a standard frame across the board, which really allows every piece to shine at its fullest potential.

How does this gallery exhibit impact the Arts Access artists, and what experiences do they gain from it?
For the artists, this is a chance to be seen and celebrated as professionals. They gain confidence, experience sharing their work with the public, and sales of their artwork. More than anything, it reinforces that their voices matter and deserve a place in the arts community.

Anything else to add?
Full Circle is really meant to be an experience – taking in the work, connecting with the artists through their art, understanding their perspectives, and seeing the culmination of their creative journeys over the past two years. It’s a celebration that will move and inspire people of all ages.
