“First, I choose my canvas. Then I choose my colors. Sometimes I lighten them and sometimes I darken. I decide on those things as I’m painting. I did this piece of art using brush strokes. I usually choose a round or flat brush to make those strokes. For other pieces of art, I draw a design and then sometimes, I tape the canvas off. I paint the area and then I take the tape off. It makes a crisper line on the painting. Then the painting comes out to my liking.” Cheryl Chapin

Cheryl Chapin
Cheryl has spent nearly three decades creating work that reflects her imagination, humor, and love of artistic expression. For her, making art is more than a pastime - it is, as she says, her passion and what “feeds her soul.” While she has explored many disciplines through Arts Access, Cheryl’s visual artwork is especially striking for its creativity and versatility. She works primarily in acrylics and digital art, moving effortlessly between carefully planned designs and playful experiments. As she puts it, sometimes she will “just plop anything anywhere on the canvas to see what comes out.” This mix of intention and spontaneity gives her work a lively, curious energy that is unmistakably her own. Cheryl is also an accomplished writer. Her plays and poems have been featured in Arts Access showcases, sometimes read aloud and other times performed by professional actors. Known for her wit, Cheryl gravitates toward comedy, saying, “I like to lighten the mood. I think it makes the performance more fun to come to.” Among her imaginative works are a comedic play about the daily lives of fish in a fish tank and Tea & Venom, a social comedy performed in March 2021 as part of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s Plays By People program. She frequently weaves recurring motifs into her writing, including “tea,” “ghosts,” and “the four seasons.” Whether through painting, digital art, poetry, or comedy, Cheryl’s work is fueled by curiosity, humor, and a love of storytelling. With nearly 30 years of creative experience, she continues to approach her practice with dedication, joy, and a desire to share her vision with others.
