Josh Handler
Josh has been creating visual art since the Arts Access Program began in 1993, developing a distinctive style that celebrates color, abstraction, and originality. He strives to make each piece “unique and interesting,” and as he says, some people find his work “mysterious” because it doesn’t follow the usual rules. In digital pieces like Fruit Salad, Josh captures the idea of fruit through colorful shapes without making it look literal, while Flying High depicts multicolored forms - some like parachutes - floating in motion across the canvas. Josh’s work often involves subtle departures from the expected. As one Arts Access facilitator explains, “He goes to great lengths to make sure his squares don’t look like typical squares, and his triangles aren’t your usual triangles. He likes to leave a bit of mystery for the viewer - he wants them to wonder, ‘What was he thinking?’” He sometimes paints directly with his hands, and other times guides facilitators through the process, directing the colors, shapes, and elements he wants on the canvas. Beyond painting, Josh is also a choreographer and dancer. He brings the same creativity and thoughtful planning to movement as he does to visual art, designing patterns that are dynamic, expressive, and full of emotion. His choreography transforms ideas into physical form, using motion to tell stories and convey feeling. Through both visual and performing arts, Josh continues to push boundaries, blending imagination, precision, and a playful sense of mystery that captivates and inspires everyone who experiences his work.
