About “Plays by People”
Plays by People is a one-of-a-kind collaborative event between Matheny’s Arts Access Program and Kean University’s Premiere Stages to present staged readings of short plays written by the Arts Access playwrights with disabilities. This year, five talented playwrights have been selected and their work will be performed by Equity actors and Premiere’s professional theater staff. Brad Goldman, Jessica Evans, Michael Erin, Rasheedah Mahali and Christopher Saglimbene will present original work created as part of the Arts Access program. These playwrights will be an integral part of the staging process, as they direct the actors how to best present their written work.
About the Stages Festival
Now in its 21st year, the New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s Stages Festival offers free and discounted performances, workshops, play readings and behind-the-scenes events for all ages every March. Events are presented by professional Equity theatres; some take place at their theatres, and some take place in libraries, community centers, performing arts houses, and more.
The Festival began as a one-week program for young people and their families. As it grew in popularity, the NJ Theatre Alliance expanded it to a full month of performances, workshops and programs for theatre lovers in all the stages of their lives. The Stages Festival is New Jersey’s largest celebration of live theatre.
